Ok, 545i is faster than 535d on the 0 - 60mph run! Accepted, the numbers don't lie.

535d is faster than 545i during in gear acceleration. Again the numbers don't lie.

Therefore I conclude that the 545i will not leave the 535d behind in most situations.

The comparison between the two cars is undoubtedly a heated and absorbing subject!

IMHO, however, that they are two incommensurable entities, so to speak, and their differences in terms in terms of feel, drive etc. cannot be summed up by a fraction of second's acceleration in favour of one or the other. All I can say is that I drove both, and both gave me great sensations, yet in a completely different manner.

Well, I do not care much about 0-100 acceleration (I'm not a traffic light racer at my age), but apart from money invested factor IMHO 535D shud win minimum on two counts: overtaking at cruise speeds and pitstops. That's decisive factors for me in everyday's live.

Merv, if you're thinking about the numbers that Clived posted, I'm pretty sure that the numbers that were shown as 545 are actually for the 530 (as another poster pointed out). The "545" specs as listed look like the 530's, plus, to my untrained eyes, it looks like someone has edited the graphic to paste "535d" and "545i" over what was actually there in the first place. Do you or anyone else have any better numbers?

As I said, Torque is NOT everything!
The Diesel will get beaten by the 545.

Oh, you are one of those Diesel freaks who want to see it written and then still don't believe it?

OK, here is the official numbers from BMW:

Attachment 7297

0-100 Km/h: 5.8 the 545, 6.5 the 535d.

I wonder why BMW failed to show the elasticity of the engine (80-120km) numbers for the 535d?

Anyways, this is a very interesting and apparently touchy subject. I'm pretty certain the 545 is faster (it should be) and I know it definitely sounds better. I think I would have been happier in the 5 if I had gotten a V8 6spd, although, I'd be surprised to see if it's worth the extra 10K premium over the 535d.

I'd like to see a test between the two as I have a feeling it will closer than some may think, but in the end, the 545 should cross the line first.

I can't make it to the meet this month, but if any 545 owners are going to be in my area befoer or after, I'd be willing to take a beating for the sakes of putting this discussion to rest.

Any takers?

Hey I would take a 535d over my 525 any day

Don't mind me, I'm just trying to lighten this topic up

That's exactly right. The posted numbers DO lie!
And I WILL leave the 535d behind, not just in most situations...

Iceman-

Isn't there going to be a 535d at the meeting in Maastricht? If so, maybe you guys could do some runs against each other?

If not, and iif you're going to be in the area of Goch, Krefeld or Monchengladbach at anytime, I could meet up with you for a little comparo.

I expect to "get left behind", but my ego is strong enough to take a loss so that we can stop all this speculation and actually see the difference.

Interested?
