Ja, they are tethered. In fact, here is a picture inside a vessel that I took recently in Bremerhaven. But they are not tethered against the forces of gravity. If the vessel tips to the side, the cars will move.

This is a minor incident compared to some...
A ship called the Tricolor sank in the English channel carrying almost 3000 new BMW, Volvo, and Saab vehicles:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/2713963.stm
The official salvage web site, with photos:
http://www.tricolorsalvage.com/
The ship was cut into pieces and removed because it was a danger to other vessels using the channel.
And for the record, there is NOTHING WRONG with vehicles with light damage being repaired by BMW itself and being sold as new vehicles.
What if a body panel was damaged during manufacturing, and replaced? What if an object struck a vehicle during shipping and the damage was repaired?
Could the vehicle no longer be sold as "new"? These things happen all the time. It is not necessary to disclose anything, and it is fine for vehicles with light damage that can be appropriately repaired to be sold as new. It's not like they're going to take severely damaged vehicles, such as in the pictures, and just cobble them together and sell them as new.
I know that doesn't make anyone with cars on that transport feel any better, but accidents can happen.

This is just terrible, as so many already have stated. I just logged on and saw it a few minutes ago. Obviously, it sucks to see brand new Bimmers destroyed before they were even enjoyed. The people I really feel for are those who invested so much of their passion for the brand and their particular car, whether by ordering exactly what they wanted months ago and expecting it in the US soon, or those who did that plus already "knew" their new pride-and-joys through European Delivery, only to see it crushed. Sorry guys.

This is a shame that it happened but these events do happen. I can see that the vehicles that had extensive damage would be considered Junked status but for the cars which need some minor paint to make good is not that big of a deal. As long as they warranty the work I don't see how the value could be decreased. If somebody scratched my car and I had it painted would the value be decreased automatically because it was not original BMW paint? If you order a Mtech kit which is painted by the dealer does that devalue the car because it was not factory paint?

Not very impressive looking tethers. Seems to me when one considers the cost & headache of this unfortunate incident, it may very well be worth it to look into improvements, because the Atlantic sure isn't going to change its unpredictable ways.
Cars have been shipped like this for decades with virtually no problem whatsoever.
Clearly they need to investigate what caused the accident to make sure THAT doesn't happen again.
But insofar as tethering the cars, for the purpose it serves, it's more than adequate.

The Atlantic? The vessel tipped in port.

Turns out that the M/V Courage, now owned by American Roll-On Roll-Off Carriers LLC, was involved an a fire and loss of power incident just about a year ago. This information taken from the website of an law firm which tracks marine casualties: "52,000-gt car carrier M/V Courage (built 1991) returned to Southampton over the weekend after an engine room fire caused her to lose power -- operated by Interocean American Shipping of the U.S., the vessel was carrying cars from the UK port to New York when oil coming from a generator caused engine lagging to catch fire alight. Portland Coastguard was alerted on Jan. 15, that the 22-strong crew were without power & steering 27 miles SE of Portland Bill. But power was restored & vessel returned to Southampton for checks. Coastguard said drifting vessel had not posed danger to shipping as it was outside the main traffic route. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Jan. 18 2006)"

I'd imagine it was some sort of ballast issue...a pump left on too long...inexperienced engineer, etc. Human error, but not weather or rough seas.
