Stick with XP for now since you only have 2GB of RAM plus Window 7 is still beta. Why would you want to be a guinea pig for Microsoft?

By the way, I'm not really an IT guy. I just know enough to be dangerous

I have been having trouble with vista since the day i bought my laptop. I plan on buying a Mac Pro around the holidays, in hopes that it will be the last computer I buy for 5 or 6 years. In the mean time my dell inspiron 9400 feels as if it is at its end and i attribute a lot of that to vista. It seems no matter how often i update drivers, do windows updates, update software, the computer is barely capable of running any program successfully without a fight.

I want to download the RC for windows 7. I am in the process of copying all of my files over to my 500GB external hardrive. My question is: will windows 7 run better then vista, or should I go back to XP?

my computer is a dell ispiron 9400
intel core 2 T7400 2.16GHz processor with 2 GB ram.

I am currently running 32 bit vista with SP1.

what would you reccomend? will all of my programs work with windows 7?

I do have a legit version of xp laying around somewhere, but i saw windows 7 in bestbuy the other day and it looked pretty.

thanks.

Get an iMac. Your life will be much better, trust me. Here is another way to put it ---> iMac = sprint booster

Yes, I think that my one year old Lenovo T61 will be my last PC. I hate them.

Yes I still have my IBM T41 from my former law firm that they bought for me in 2003. The T41 was bulletproof. The Lenovo T61 is a total POS. It weighs a ton, has short battery life (the T41 could fly cross-country on one battery charge) and it freezes a lot. And that's "progress". In 2-3 years time when the T61 is obsolete, I will bite the bullet and go Apple. My firm's Citrix works beautifully with Apple according to my colleagues who were smart enough to have bought Apple.

My firm provides us with Dells but I like to have my own laptop that is not the property of the firm. That's what I use when I travel.

make sure there are drivers available for your laptop before you upgrade to WIN7, expecially audio and video. I've been running WIN7 since last year (beta tester)... and when i first installed it there were no video or audio drivers available for my HP laptop at the time. It sucked! so make sure DELL is providing drivers and support for your particular laptop. And dont run 64bit as most programs available are 32bit based and will not run correctly on 64bit or at all.

You can always dual boot and run WIN7 and VISTA. As for people that say vista sucks, it doesnt, you just dont know what you're doing or dont know how to clean and maintain pc's. I've ran vista for years on my own machines and many friend's machines and i havent had any problems unlike how i read around people having... maybe you're doing something wrong or your hardware is not unto par with the OS requirements.... im not flaming, just making some noise

one thing i can think of is that you got a vista machine bloatted with software and crap from DELL while i've always done clean installs hence only the software i want to run runs... get familiar with the "msconfig" command so you can turn off alot of applications that like to autostart and take up RAM as this could also cause problems. As you install software it always installs an entry so it starts up when the computer starts up. Thats why you'll have 15 icons (programs) running by the time on the right corner. Killing these "applications" saves RAM and boot time and minimizes problems.

blah blah blah, my 2 cents

goodluck
