Does this really matter? I don't understand why someone would even want one without an att contract?

An unlocked iphone 3G doesn't work on other service's 3G networks, different frequency.
Not really, but one poster had said that you couldn't get one without a contract...

Just as a point to those who think 3G is faster than EDGE. In theory it is - in fact, here in Austria, we get 3G speeds of up to 7.2 MBit. BUT (yes there is a but), try to get full 3G coverage. In the main cities in Austria, you are ok, but as soon as you leave the main cities, you are down to EDGE. I believe it is not anything better in the US, as we consider to have one of the best 3G networks in the world, and even then it is not perfect...

Its pretty good in the states, most major cities have it. Certain states like California have almost full coverage. It is an ever expanding network, won't be long before it is everywhere. Read an article the other day, Att 3G speeds are considerably faster than its rivals.

I just don't really understand how it is a gimmick.

If you are new customer you get the discount with a two-year agreement. Just like every service provider when get a new phone, you get a two-year agreement phone discount.

If you are a current customer, looking to upgrade. You have to sign a two-year extension to get the phone discount. Just like every service provider, when upgrading to a new phone. I have Tmobile service, if I want a new treo, I have to sign a two-year extension to get the phone discount.

If you want the iphone without a contract, you have to pay a $400 premium, no discount. Just like every service provider, when buying a phone with no contract, you get no two-year contract discount.

Not to mention, there is no reason to get the iphone 3G without a contract. It won't work on other 3G networks.

Does anyone know if it fits in the existing iPhone snap-in?

AT&T will sell an iPhone without a contract, but it is indeed for a $400 premium,

That article is false. They are giving misinformation. Look at the date on the article. It's from July 1st. I'm telling all of you I know what I am talking about. Go to the Apple website and it states in fine print everywhere that a 2 year contract is required. If you don't believe me and plan on trying to get one today or in the future good luck you will be disappointed.

You didn't bother to read it, did you? It specifically talks about future contract free sales. There are many other sources discussing the contract-free option - and all of them were using information provided directly by AT&T...

Even today it's possible to pay an inflated price for the phone. If you are not a current iPhone owner or if you are not eligible for upgrade on your AT&T account you'll pay an additional $200.

From the posters link on the att website

In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8G or $699 (16G.

Bear in mind, this just means you're not locked into a plan. AT&T will still activate the phone (and charge you) on their network prior to giving you the phone. Not sure what implications this will have on hacking the phone.

Not any more. That stops with the 3G and the subsidy. Apple is getting full retail from AT&T for the phones but not any piece of the rate plan.
That's correct; however, the new subsidy that AT&T has to pay Apple is being recouped in their revised/higher rate plan. The subsidy is supposed to be more lucrative for Apple than the previous revenue sharing agreement.
