I bought the iphone the day it came out like a fool. I love the phone but will not be upgrading, I'm NOT signing another contract. BTW I upgraded to the 2.0 firmware this morning, it leaked. So far its very nice, exchange support is a big plus!

I was shock to find out Apple is as dirty as ATT. Apple had never been that cheap, using such dirty gimmick advertisment.

That's right. Other than 3G and GPS, the 2.0 firmware updates the original iPhone to the same level of functionality as the new one.

if you're not getting any plan, you sure can buy it but 599/699 for 8G/16G
Many people fall into their adv for 199/299.
Many people fall into their adv for 199/299.
This is how all phones are, if you sign a two year agreement you get a discount.
How is this any different?
Data service cost more because it is 3G, like all previous 3G att phones.

Isn't the 3g more than 3x faster? That would be the major selling point for me.

Yeah I figured this crap out today too when I was calling around. I had the original Iphone but it did not support BES, hence no company email so I opted out and went with BBerry.
Before you could buy the phone from Apple and do everything on itunes to set it up..now they are working a racket and MAKING YOU activate before you leave the store. If you are not eligable for upgrade the 8gb phone goes from 199 to 399!!! I didnt even ask about the 16gb....screw them. I am buying the BBerry Bold when it comes out...forget these pricks.

How is this any different that other services?
If I want to upgrade my Tmobile phone, to get the discount on the phone I have to renew my contract.
This is how they all do it.

Also a unlocked iphone 3G will not work on other 3G networks.
For example:
T-mobile USA 3G uses 1700 MHz spectrum for download and 2100 MHz for upload (850/1900 for voice). AT&T uses the 850/1900 MHz frequency spectrum for 3G data (850 MHz for voice).
You can still use it on Tmobile, just at slower Edge speeds.

To people did not know their dirty marketing gimmick, here is the trick.
To those who really really thought it was just 199 or 299 a piece and not falling into first 2 conditions and don't want to spend that over $600 for a phone. You can save your time, don't let Steve Jobs get you.
