Hows that an Apple fault? ATT is jacking up prices and set the conditions. Apple just makes the phone.
Apple gets a cut from the AT&T service plan.

That said, the awesome new 2.0 firmware is only hitting the streets today (and only then if you know where to look on Apple's software update servers) but it's been jailbroken and unlocked already... Official release of both the 2.0 firmware should be tomorrow morning.
REALLY? where? umm PM me.

Not any more. That stops with the 3G and the subsidy. Apple is getting full retail from AT&T for the phones but not any piece of the rate plan.

Don't think for a second that Apple wasn't 100% aware of the intentions of AT&T -- if anything it was all part of the agreement between the two companies, etc. and, as someone else says, Apple may be getting a piece of the subscription pie...

They pulled the plug on that deal, Apple and AT&T aren't revenue sharing from this point on.

I bought a HTC TyTn II (virtually the same as att tilt) in august/sept last year for $800

I've had 3g and gps, cut and paste, mms, tethering, bluetooth stereo, multiple email accounts, full keyboard, access to thousands of apps like tomtom sat nav

my phone still owns the 3g iphone

bmw 5 series = windows mobile/blackberry = business

toyota prius = apple = follower of marketing

next phone - http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/?lc=en&cc=us

if you're not getting any plan, you sure can buy it but 599/699 for 8G/16G

Many people fall into their adv for 199/299.
This is absolutely incorrect! You cannot buy a new 3G iphone unless you sign a 2 year contract! There is no "outright" price on the phone. The prices are $199/$299 if you are a new customer, current iphone customer, or upgrade eligeable...which means you are currently on a month to month contract since you have fulfilled your previous 2 year contract and have not upgraded your phone since your contract expired.

If you are still in contract and received a discounted price on your last phone you will have to pay the $399/$499 price on the phone and also agree to sign a new 2 year contract.

So once again you cannot buy the new iphone outright. Every iphone sold at an Apple store or AT&T store will be activated on a new or existing account before you leave the store. It's not like the last iphone that you buy, leave the store with a sealed box, and activate at home on itunes.

AT&T will sell an iPhone without a contract, but it is indeed for a $400 premium,

Does this really matter? I don't understand why someone would even want one without an att contract?

An unlocked iphone 3G doesn't work on other service's 3G networks, different frequency.

It can be for those who want to buy the iPhone and use it on the ATT network but just dont want the contact.
