My vote goes for the 50D as well. Can you wait for the 5D Mark II?

I'm leaning towards the 50D because I'm familiar with Canon, but I'm leaving my options open for now. As for the 5D Mark II, just the body alone will eat heavily into my settlement money because it is so much more expensive than the 50D. The cost difference between the 50D and the 5D Mark II is big enough that I could probably buy another L lens with the money. Your thoughts on the 3 most useful lenses for the 50D?

Good news indeed! Glad things worked out for you.

If you're used to the Canon interface (menu system and controls), my vote would be to stay with Canon.
The Canon I'm familiar with, so I'm gravitating towards the 50D, but I'm keeping my mind open to the D90. Sent you a PM regarding lenses... tell me what you think.

If you want L lenses, my first pick would be the 16-35 giving you the equivalent of 25.6-56mm range on the 50D's cropped sensor. But only on a FF sensor can you truly appreciate the 16mm.

The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is one of the lenses I wanted, but since the 50D is a crop sensor body, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM might make more sense in terms of a wide zoom lens. But if I get the 50D, I'll definitely be getting the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. I had that lens in my stolen gear...

For sheer usability, if I had to pick 3 lenses to have in the bag, it would be:

10-22 f/3.5-4.5 EF-S
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200 f/2.8L

How about if I replace the 24-70 f/2.8L for the 24-105 f/4L?

I haven't had any experience with that glass, so I can't comment on it. However, the reviews on FM were generally good:

Thanks for linking me up with the FM site. Some excellent reviews on lenses!
