Can i just say, florence is a really nice city. the traffic is pretty messy though and would not recommend taking your own car; your nerves will be shot by the end of your trip. public transport is best. Driving as an italian in florence would be fun i think! especially in one of the smart cars which are everywhere, as are the lethal scooters!!!! enjoy your trip

Dont listen to anyone, take your 545 with you. It doesnt cost too much, about $1000.00 each way. Rentals will cost more. I have been to Athens Greece about 20 times, and they drive very agressive, but in a good way. They all drive the same way. Driving in the states, the majority of people drive like slow un-responsive zombies, and the rest drive like we do with our BMWs. It only takes a couple of days to get into the driving spirit, and then its great!!!

I think you will enjoy a lot that experience.
The trafic is not bad, take care to scooters and parking (bumpers will suffer).
I drove in Manhattan, before 11 sept, and my worse nightmare was to find a parking along street, the other covered park costs big money.
The speed limit in "Autostrada" is 130 km/h.
If you go up to 40 km/h more (<170 Km/h) the fine, if captured, will be 180 euro and 2 point on license (for italians).
More than 40 km/h (>170 Km/h) roughly 350 euro 10 points and driving license suspended for a certain period.
Notwithstanding all I suggest to bring your car with you and enjoy the ride.
