I just talked to my local dealer who stated that the price for the I-pod adaptor and trim piece with Installation would be $584.83

I have an 04' 545i without the CD changer.

Does this price seem right? I just don't want to get ripped off... Thanks!

I have just made a few enquirires about this:

Looks promissing

PS. a very happy new year... I'm probably going to have a hangover in the morning.

Well guys, it's now over 12 months since my original post and I am happy to tell you that I finally took the plunge and today I have collected my car having had the "Retrofit Kit" iPod adapter fitted. I am VERY happy with it, it really is superb!!!!

The part number is "65 41 0 415 655 = iPod interface retrofit kit". For full details on how this thing looks and works on your iDrive, check out: http://www.bmwusa.com/BMW2003/Templates/iB...CACHEHINT=Guest

I have also attached an original BMW PDF instruction book on how to fit this (if you are happy to do this type of thing yourself).
Personally I am from the UK and took mine to an Independant BMW specialist in Warrington called "David Paul BMW". These guy are ex dealer BMW and certainly know their stuff. Their labour charges are half the cost of Main Dealers. However - one word of warning - the installation of this kit requires a re-code of the iDrive. On my car (which is the 2005 model) it did actually take some time, but the guys got there in th end. I can highly recomment David Paul (Tel: 01925 232 515) if you live any where near Warrington in the North West of England.

If you are thinking of adding an iPod connection, my adivce would be to go for this Retro Kit option and don't bother with the cheaper FM transmitters etc. You will NOT be disappointed !!!

+1 on that. I've just bought a used E61 (it was built late 2004), and have had the Retrofit iPod kit fitted. It's a couple of hours labour because of the software upgrades needed in addition to the actual fitting of the kit. Gives you full track listings on the I-drive and control from steering wheel buttons.

It works extremely well - not exactly cheap, but it's a very nice upgrade for the car.

If you have an iPod, you are better off getting the full iPod adapter. It is easier to install and cheaper if you already have a CD changer. Expect about $400-$600 for the adapter including installation and software updates at a dealer. For non iPods, I don't know the cost of just an aux input. You'd still have to manually control the device.

I don't know of any retrofit's yet for the '08 USB port option. That allows full steering wheel/iDrive access to the music from any supported USB attachable device or flash memory.

Im pretty sure the kit does not play anything, its just a link to the amp in the head unit.

If your iPod can play it it will come out of the speakers
