BMW offers an Auxilary Audio Input option which your dealer can install for you. Once this is installed you'll have a new screen in iDrive and be
able to plug in any mp3 player, cd player, etc.. and play it through the cars stereo system.

Took my '06 530i into the dealer today to have the aux input installed... they called me and told me they couldn't do it because BMW has not released a version of the aux input kit for the 2006 5-series. Does it make sense that this item would be changed from '05 to '06? It's not a very complex piece of hardware, I think...

In wonderment, Jon.

Could this (Auxilary Audio Input) be an option to plug in an external CD changer as well then as opposed to the Logic7's back-of-the-glovebox installation?

Of course you'd have to deal with it hanging out on the seat or something. I don't know how it'd work. Any ideas?

You can use any device that has an Audio output via headset out or Line out. For instance I use a cassette player and a non-ipod MP3 player depending on what I want at the time. I have a portable CD player that I tested, but of course with the built in CD and Cd Changer I do not need to use that unit. If you had a CD/DVD changer that you could power and had an Audio output u could cable up to the Aux input to listen, but could not control the unit except externally.

I use a portable DVD player on the AUX input. That's an awsome sound when you're watching a movie.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Iceman, I'd assume you could only watch DVD's when parked, right? The cassette player bit is interesting as I have over 100 left over and only a home player to play them on. Any 8-track connectors out there?? - Just kidding...

Unrelated question for cobradav - why do you have an Akula-class sub on your personal space under your name? Just curious about your choice of imagery.

It's a portable DVD player, so I CAN watch while driving, but I guess it wouldn't be long... before crashing...

It's for the passenger(s).

My BMW '05 530i came with a 6 stacker CD player.

When I asked about whether I could get the iPod auxiliary cable installed, they said that's fine, but I'll lose my 6 stacker!

This isn't exactly a well publicised fact and I'm glad the BMW service rep told me that before he went and did the install!

Anyone else run into this issue?
