+1 Its a luxury Lexus like looking BMW now. Bit like a chubby athlete. not sleek enough or bold enough overall. And with such a huge flat front nose, I wonder if this actually produces more friction/drag on the car on the highway?
As with others, I never liked the E60 when it came out. Took me 3 years to like it and another 1 to buy it. Love my 550i. I was going to sell it, but for what its worth, I cannot replace it without coming out of pocket another $40k, minimum. I'll eat the depreciation, stick with 2 more years of warranty and free maintainence. Who's better than me?

But I don't know what BMW can do about the 400 pound weight gain. I can't believe they allowed the car to get so damn porky.

I too went round the block in a new 550 a couple of days ago.
I think the styling is still BMW ... the performance is spectacular (remember, I've been driving a 530xi for the past 3-4 years). The equipment level is very high for the price ($71K) - at least on the one my dealer let me try. I agree it's more like a 7 than a 5 but that may not be all that bad if you're wanting a largish sport sedan.
I suspect the 3's will become the default move for drivers who feel the new larger 5 isn't for them. When well equipped they are fast and comfortable and size wise close to what my e28 was.
That said, my evaluation of the 550 is that it's a luxurious and sportier 7 at a lower price ... and I predict that is exactly what will happen. Watch the migration southward.

I saw the 550i and the 535i today with the sport package and I actually love them. These cars look better than the e39 and it looks like a BMW should look. I will definitely buy one.

The M sport isn't due until around September, so I'll wait and see what that looks like. I think the one above must be the aero kit or something and not a sport? (unless we have different trim levels here).
The euro M sport at least is currently driving around Munich in disguise and as you can see has a different set of bumpers to the one above:

I am going it have to give the OP a -1 on the looks of the car, with the exception of the 550 sport wheels. I think they do no justice to the car, and I think they would be a 6itch to keep clean. This is likely to be my next car, but I will wait to see if the M Sport package offers better selection in wheels. With my luck a week after I buy, there will be available the wheels I want!

My Ride: E60
I have to agree. It does not have a lot of "wow" to it like the E60 did. I liked the E60 all along, even when 50%+ said they hated Bangle and what he did to the 5. But a lot of people came around, as we all know.
Well this time they did not ruin the car like Acura did with their TL.
In my opinion, it's just "clean", sleek, and I want it.
Here are more pics from an eBay ad. Wow, $72k USD!

My Ride: 2011 F10 535i -Brilliant Graphite/Oyster
2006 E5004matic- I must have been on drugs when I got this car
2004 545i Black Sapphire/Truffle Brown interior
555
Thanks for posting the ebay link, I was at my dealer earlier this week and leased an Imperial Blue/Black 535 that was on it's way with arrival in about a week, the dealer called me the next day to advise they could not secure this car and instead offered me a Graphite/Oyster that they were able to secure, I have been agonizing over this all week as it is very hard to determine the look from BMW's website. The pics in the Ebay add are so much better and have hooked me on this colour combination. The only down side is the Graphite one does not come with the technology package which here in Canada adds all the new camera technology, park assist and lane departure and blind spot features. Would have to have a car ordered with 3 months delivery and am not prepared for a wait like that. Thanks again for the link
