I went through a similar experience. I had a 1998 e39 528i. When it was time to replace, I felt I could get much more bang for the buck from the Acura RL. Loaded with technology, all wheel drive, 300HP and priced new for what I would pay for a used 5 series. I drove the Acura for about 6 months and while it drove very nicely it lacked "character". I had been spoiled with BMW. I sold the Acura and a loss and purchased a CPO'd 550 (2 years old with 22k miles) for about $1k less then I originally paid for the Acura.
With the exception of iDrive and handling in snow, the BMW blew away the Acrua in all respects. I won't make that mistake again....
