Default Offering SMG assistance

Hello,

I've owned my E60 M5 for a few years and have an intimate relationship with the Getrag GS7S47BG SMG III transmission used in it.

While the non-M SMG transmission is different, a large part of it's design, maintenance, and operation are similar if not identical.

On M5board, I have helped numerous people troubleshoot their SMGs and called BS on many dealers who seem to be lost in diagnosing this properly. It never occurred to me to post here, but how about a thread for those in need?

This is highly invaluable to anyone with an SMG. I am a lurker on the M5Board, because I haven't yet found my M5, and I see your forum posts quite often.

To anyone on this board, Jim is quite knowledgeable with anything E60 related, not just SMG issues. If you have a problem, I'm sure he can help you out.

I'll join the M5Board sooner or later, I just need to find the M!

Hey guys, I have an 07 550i sport with the smg transmission... So I've taken it to two shops and the dealer and cannot receive any help because nobody knows what to do.. Help please, I just bought the car about two months ago and only driven it for for two weeks.

You might wanna start with specifics, hard shifts? Sounds? Etc. Not gonna receive much help if OP doesn't know where to start.

Where to start? lol. So I was doing a couple pulls and spinning some tires and i managed to be an idiot and burn my clutch... Anyway, left me on the side of the road at 3 am and I had it towed to the shop I usually take my cars too.. Ordered the clutch and flywheel kit at ecs. Week later parts arrived and we installed them. So we screwed everything back up and dropped it. Put it into reverse, pump primed and made couple clinking noises as if trying to engage but nothing. Also when I put into gear it flashes back to neutral on lcd display. Weird thing is, it goes into gears while in the air. I then read that it had to be recalibrated and adapted so then another tow to the dealer. They ended up charging me 280$ for nothing... They said it wouldnt take the adaptations. Yet another tow to a friends shop where he said he could fix it.. 3rd time we took the tran out and took a look at everything which seemed to be fine. slave cylinder was fine but the end of the rod was the tiniest chip. They tried again last night and said it was 40 minutes in and was somewhat being resposive and adapting but something was grinding and didnt sound right..Also I changed couple of relays (salmon colored).

Also I just put in a new pump while I had it.


Transmission is the GS653BZ

Okay got an update on said issues. Turns out the shop I had originally taken it to installed it incorrectly... was misaligned and the springs in the pressure plate were not tensioned back. Anyways just thought I'd update you guys.

She's up and running after resting for about a month.

I'm glad you finally fixed your 550i.
One question, I have same 2007 550i smg and try to replace smg relay and salmon relay but inside ecu box there is no salmon and smg relays originally placed. Can you tell me where can I find them to replace?
