All the data in these files are obtained from BMW and Mercedes Benz Annual Financial Reports.

As you can see, in 2008 the 5 series sedan and estate sold 202,000 units in comparison to E-Class/CLS 173,000 units.

In 2009 however, due to the introduction of the new E-Class and the ending of the E60 5 series, the E-Class/ClS sold 212,000 units in comparison to 176,000 for the 5 series.

It is interesting also to notice the extreme advantage of the 3 series over the C-Class in both 2008 and 2009.

The X3, X5 and X6 outsell the GLK, GL,, G and M significantly.

In 2008 and S/CL/SL/SLR/Maybach c;ass outsold the 7/6 series/Rolls Royce class, but in 2009 the 7/6 series/Rolls Royce class sold more than the S/CL/SL/SLR/Maybach class for the first time in history.

In 2008 BMW sold 1,435,000 units compared to MB's 1,273,000.
In 2009 BMW sold 1,287,000 units compared to MB's 1,094,000.

In 2008 and 2009, BMW total revenues were much higher than MB. I can get the exact numbers with net profit if you need to see them.

Hope this information helps.
The S-Class outsold the 7 Series in 2009 by about 700 units.

Wow, only 700 units to go for the 7 series to out sell the S-Class?

That is quite impressive, I thought the difference was more than that.

Seems about right. I've got 5-6 friends who've bought the new E class the past few months whereas only one has bought the F10.

Don't worry. After some time they'll get rid of their E-Class and buy the new 5 Series.

Honestly, what does all this matter to us, the end user, anyway? Are we really that worried whether or not a certain model outsells another from another brand? Maybe if we work for BMW, own stock, or are a journalist, then I can understand the interest. BMW is not some up-and-coming small upstart car company whose life depends on one model. It's not like if they fail to outsell their rival, then they'll discontinue support or parts. That's ridiculous. When I buy a Coke, should I be worried whether Pepsi is out-selling it? No....who cares?! All this stuff is interesting bathroom reading. Nothing more.

Just my 2 pesos.

It does matter, Pete. The sales figures are the most important indicator of which competing product is better. If your product is better, then more people will buy it.

By that logic, I guess Ford then is a better product than Porsche because it sells millions of more vehicles.

I agree. There are a huge number of factors that drive sales volume. Quality of product is only one of them. To state that there is a direct relationship between quality of product and sales volume is to oversimplify things greatly.

One of my best friends, currently driving an MB E-Class, after riding with me and driving my F10 550i, has decided to get a 2011 535. He said that the F10 is substantially better and more sporty than his E-Class. Plus it is a better value.
