If I remember correctly, Diesel is about as expensive per gallon(if not more)than Premium Unleaded gasoline. People in the U.S. won't see past that - so it will be harder to convince them to buy a diesel powered car regardless of who makes it. There is also more maintenance involved.

Furthermore, the Japanese and U.S. auto makers have been giving their gas/electric hybrids alot more marketing exposure.

For starters, the fuel filter needs to be replaced more often. Not sure about more frequent oil changes, but the required type of oil is a more stringent specification than on unleaded gas engines.
