Switched to Blizzaks on winter wheels when it was in the 40's (F) *and* raining. Summer tires were really slick then. When it climbed back in to the 50's and 60's (F), I switched back to summer tires. I'm in the Saint Louis, MO, USA region.

Edit: Woops, sorry. I drive an E60 and didn't notice this is an E61 thread.

+1 (just to reach post #800)
If you get some snow (trying to stay on topic here) in Trieste, take some pics and post them up!
And if you have any snow pictures from your latest, central European E61 road trip, I would be happy to see them!

Not yet. I'll be making the switch to snows next weekend or Thanksgiving weekend. I'm going to be sad switching to the 18" stock wheels.

Perhaps I need to buy a staggered 19" winter wheel/tire set...
I will ask Anzafin about this idea...

Go for 19" if you can. This winter has already convinced me that it could be a nightmare driving 19"s here.

The worst driving conditions that I have seen in the last 10 years was last November - when I drove my E39 to Ylivieska, to buy the E61. And by the time I was south of Jyv?skyl?, it was simple.
I heard that on certain roads in Stockholm, they plan to ban studded winter tires due to pollution issues. I wish that they would do that here, for whatever reason they can come up with. I was driving next to someone in Naantali in SEPTEMBER, and they already had studded tires on their Volvo. WTF?!
