Recently I've noticed that our Beemer seems to suffering from a bit of a lumpy tickover - it also sometimes happens on long drives too. Like it's misfiring a bit. It's not hugely noticeable, indeed my wife just took the car on a 350 mile round trip yesterday and she didn't flag anything up.

Does anyone know what it's likely to be? Some sort of dirty filter? Someone mentioned DPF filters failing if the car's used primarily for short journies (which ours is).

I'm a mechanical numpty, so don't know where to start.

The first thing to try is a better grade of diesel or petrol, like Shell V Power or BP Ultimate, something like that.

If that doesn't make things better, then it could be a blocked air filter (you can check this yourself easilly), or blocked fuel filter (not a DIY job given your knowledge) . and if that doesn't work, then it could be one of the sensors, such as a MAF or one of several other sensors. Otherwise it could be a software fault.

These cars are quite complex and the only way to be sure is to get the car into a dealer or independant BMW specialist and they will put a diagnostic tool on the car. This will check the car for faults by downloading 'codes' that relate to patricular faults such as sensors that are failing or faults that are present. this only takes 5-10 minutes.

This costs very little and it will save you time by identifying the problem quickly.

If it's sensor, then it can be changed quickly and comparitively cheaply. However, I would try the higher grade fuel first because it might be that you are running the car on low grade fule for too long and they can sometime be sensitive to this.

Just noticed where you are located

TCS Autos in High Wycombe will sort it out for you and will offer you free advice first if you call up and tell them the problem.

I know TCS VERY well.

As soon as my car was out of warranty, I started using them.

It's just come back from it's MOT and need a microfilter change.

It may just be pyschological, but the car feels better. I've recently switched back to using V-Power or Ultimate when I have the choice, so I'll see how it goes too.

If nothing changes, it'll go back to TCS. It's got ot go there for a 4-wheel alignment anyway, so I may as well get them to check it at the time.
