Without boring everyone to death, my 535D touring has an automatically opening tailgate, when you push the button it motors up, when your done, it motors back down again. However, that's not what my question is about. When you open the tailgate, the load cover also used to motor up gently, and when you shut it, it would go down again.

Recently, it went wrong, the local dealers charged a fortune to fix it, but now when you open it, it just slams up to the top rather than motoring up. They insist this is what they do and that should never have just motored to the top nice and gently. I told them mine always did, and they say it must have been faulty for years, because that's not how it should work. (I know that some without the motorised tailgate do just go up, and then you pull them down again when you shut the tailgate, however this one is different if you have a motorised tailgate).

If you have one, please, I desperately need to know what yours does so I can prove my point as I'm in a major argument with them.

Cheers for your help.

Sorry but I think the dealer may be correct. If you open just the glass and then instead of actually shutting the glass use a pen to fool the catch you can watch the cover come down. You'll then see the little "pushers" go back up to the top once the cover is lowered. Then push the button as though to release the already opened glass and you'll see how/why the cover just sort of slams open. Make sure you release the catch before you try to actually close the glass!!

Thanks for the reply.

Can I just check that you have the electric tailgate option.

Cheers

The video also depicts an E61 with the auto tailgate.

Good video, I always wandered it how is supposed to function? I purchased my car CPO, how does one know whether this option is installed? When I open the tailgate I do see a small retraction but nothing like this.

The auto tailgate and auto luggage cover come as a pair; to the best of my knowledge they are not available individually.

I have the same configuration in my car, I guess my auto luggage cover does not work!

I'm glad I read this thread as I thought it was my imagine about the autoclose feature. I was sure when we first bought the car that the cover used to auto close. My wife convinced me that it wasn't the case and never looked into it! I guess I will be calling my service advisor this week!!!

You can confirm that you have the auto luggage cover close feature if you look in the slot/track that the cover travels in and you can see what looks like a fuzzy spring.
