What's the problem?
Not sure. However , Both Right backup lamp and right brake lamp in tailgate do not work, nor does the rear window wiper.
Upon inspection of wires/loom inside right hinge cover, I can see other wires have been compromised and skinned.

This thread and forum has been most helpful.

Usually near the hinges the loom becomes hard and brittle and breaks

If you have a test lamp check the power either side of the hinge to see which wires are not completing the circuit

Was as able to obtain wiring diagram. After inspecting at hinge I cut and spliced all wires, cutting at tailgate hinge and pull through to speaker. Three were completely broken and two others were skinned.
Since I was in there it was sensible to replace them all. Solder and shrink wrapped all wires taking no chances. Well worth the time and effort as all tailgate lights and functions work.
both bulb malfunction warnings went away. Woo hoo.

Thanks. Any idea about rear washer fluid?. Reservoir is full, fluid sprays fine on front but none comes out back when I press the wand forward. I inspected the nozzle and blew some compressed air in it.

I just purchased a E61 and this is EXACTLY what is happening with my rear struts. Thankfully, everything still works but I can see the rust and it looks like I'll be doing the replacing of them as well as some other fixes.

Pretty sure this is what I need:

BALL PIN . M10 Part Number: 41627148797

RIGHT GAS PRESSURIZED SPRING . 315N Part Number: 51247201468

And hopefully not this:

Hydraulic cylinder Part Number: 51247163662

Has anyone done this recently? I did it on my wife's Touareg but not sure how much more difficult this is. Thanks!

It’s very very easy
Simply put a screwdriver detergent the rusted stir and the body and pop it off

Remember to get some to hold up the tailgate or it will fall on your head

Then you simply set the new strut in place and give it a hit with your hand and it will slip in place

Many for sale on eBay e61 rear tailgate strut

It's really that easy? I actually bought an OEM right strut and will let you know how it goes. Thanks
