I had a W211 E55 in 2003 and believe me when I tell you it was scary quick. Huge amounts of torque at very low RPMs (516 lb/ft starting at 2,650 RPM), and a very fast auto gearbox (as auto gearboxes go). I sold it after 4 months because the handling was terrible, the road feel was numb and the brakes were horrible--and I'm interested in an all around performer, not just the quickest car off the line.

As an all around car, defined by the full range of performance (quickness, handling, road feel, etc.), there's no doubt that the E60 M5 (even though I haven't driven one yet...) is the superior car, but since this thread is about quickness, I think you'd be sorely disappointed if you think the E60 M5 would blow the doors off a W211 E55 in a straight line race--at any speed.

I'm not one for racing, but with the E55 you were a target for every racer boy wannabe, and on a few occassions I couldn't resist , and I spanked a Porsche 996 Turbo from a standstill, and a 360 Modena on a highway from 100 MPH+, to name a few.

But but but... THEY said...

Well M5board put out a few vids and there was one with a Tuened E55 against the new M5 and both times the E55 lost... so *shrugs* I still think the M5 would be faster than the W211 E55... I know the E55 is scary fast... but its hard to believe the M5 isnt faster.

I have those vids, and I'm pretty sure it was a stock E55 sedan. Don't you find it curious that when they raced the M5 against the E55 (but not the other cars), they used a rolling start?

Hi Stream: How about giving us your predictions?

It would be pure speculation on my part (or anybody else who hasn't driven one), so I'll reserve judgment until I drive one...

I bought the VCD when it was first released a few months ago, and just watched it again. It was a stock E55, and they did a rolling start from 50 KPH (31 MPH). Everybody can draw their own conclusions why they did a rolling start with the E55, but not any other car... There was a tuned Porsche Turbo, but the E55 was stock.

I uploaded it to here...

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M725Z55T

Follow that link... the website might look scary but its ok, trust me.

Then at the top right you'll see a countdown timer. Please wait ... You have to wait till thats over ~45 secs then there will be a link that pops up in the same spot, click that to download.

I would suggest right clicking and save target as...

OK, no problem. But, I think reasonble extrapolations are possible, and one can factor in corporate motivations, etc.

Yes--pretty close--certainly the M5 didn't "blow the doors off" the E55. The beginning was blurry, but it appeared to be a rolling start, like this one from m5board:
M5 vs. E55

As I said previously, of all the races on the m5board vid, only the one vs. the E55 is a rolling start, which leads the skeptic in me to believe the result wasn't what they wanted from a standing start... :

I think the 2 cars will be pretty close in terms of quickness--and actually would be disappointed if BMW didn't ensure the M5 was a tad quicker, given the E55 is a 2 year old model. But for overall performance, I don't think anybody doubts the M5 is the superior car.

Given the M5 was released 2 years after the E55, I would hope BMW made sure is was at least a tad quicker than the E55, since I would think they consider it to be the M5's most comparable competitor. So shave 0.1 off 0 - 60 MPH, and 0.2 off 1/4 mile, from the best E55 times! From what I've seen the M5 does have the advantage above 80 MPH or so.
