Hi Friends:

A recent thread encouraged me to think about how fast the M5 will be as reported in the "big three" US auto mags--Road & Track, Motor Trend, and Car & Driver. So, I went through the latest road-test summaries of the three mags in my possession. I made my own summary of the given performance values for cars that I judged will be pretty close in performance to the new M5. Where available, I summarized 0-60 times, 0-100 times, 1/4 mile times, and 1/4 mile speeds. I also indicated which mag reported each set of values and the issue in which the values appeared. I then inserted my best predictions about the value(s) that will tend to be reported for the new M5 when tested by the mags--with my screen name inserted in bold in the normal mag/issue spaces.

I am, of course, aware that ranges of values will reported by the mags. And, I am aware that it will be difficult to judge who comes closest in prediciting the value(s) that will be reported. But, eventually, we could try to single out a winner (somehow--maybe voting). And, there might be a tie since some of us might agree with others. So, don't hesitate to make your predictions the same as someone elses. A clear majority opinion might even emerge--which would be interesting in its own right.

EDIT: If you want to play, all you have to do is give me your M5 predictions for 0-60 time, 1/4 mile time, and 1/4 mile speed. I'll transfer your predictions to the table, along with your screen name, and put your line in bold. You can base your predictions on data beyond the table if you want--except for other magazine tests. Your on your honor. ~{;^) Good luck and may the winner be given a new M5 by BMW.

I knew you were an optimist. ~(;^) 11.4, wow! Ill insert you into the original table. And, the guy at BMW said you'd get a real one--any color and options you want--presented at a ceremony at BMW headquarters in Munich.

I had a W211 E55 in 2003 and believe me when I tell you it was scary quick. Huge amounts of torque at very low RPMs (516 lb/ft starting at 2,650 RPM), and a very fast auto gearbox (as auto gearboxes go). I sold it after 4 months because the handling was terrible, the road feel was numb and the brakes were horrible--and I'm interested in an all around performer, not just the quickest car off the line.

As an all around car, defined by the full range of performance (quickness, handling, road feel, etc.), there's no doubt that the E60 M5 (even though I haven't driven one yet...) is the superior car, but since this thread is about quickness, I think you'd be sorely disappointed if you think the E60 M5 would blow the doors off a W211 E55 in a straight line race--at any speed.

I'm not one for racing, but with the E55 you were a target for every racer boy wannabe, and on a few occasions I couldn't resist ;) , and I spanked a Porsche 996 Turbo from a standstill, and a 360 Modena on a highway from 100 MPH+, to name a few. :P

I'll guess for the E60 M5, the BEST times reported by one of the three carmags will be:

0-60 4.2
1/4 mile 12.2 @ 120

I'll bet I'm withing a tenth on the times, and 1 mph on the best quarter mile speed. I'm basing this on all the Euro testing that's already been done, with the understanding that the US testers sometimes abuse the car a bit more...

You can't take cash or the equivalent. You have to take the car.
