Bernd Ramler of AMG, who worked with porsche to develop the Carrera GT and GT3 engines.. And claims the 6.3na to be his greatest achievement . porsche gt engine must be crap then ?

how you enjoyint the m5 ???
i was talking about the GT3 engine.. the 6.3 na is not in this years competition
He would say that though I think most things I do are my greatest achievement to date, it's only natural. He's hardly going to say that his Porsche work was excellent, but he's now assisted in the design for a $hite Merc AMG engine

The M5 is just bonkers, no other way to describe it. Already had a couple of scary moments in the wet this morning, so i fully realise i've got alot of learning to do.

Will post a much fuller report after the DMS work & when i get back from The Ring in a couple of week.

Quite honestly, I don't see what is so great about the 6.3. It's an evolution of their V8 engine. From an engineering standpoint, getting 517 HP out of 6.3 liters is not a particularly stunning achievement. If they'd done that with 5 liters, I'd be impressed.

It's a new engine, completely designed and built in-house by AMG, apparently with very little in common with any other MB engine. It's not fair to call it an evolution of the older engines. As for how stunning an achievement - well, let's wait until the tests (and test drives) start to show up! I do suspect this is the start of a new chapter for MB and AMG.

Yes, the capacity of the engine dictates more the hp/torque numbers, especially torque. Not necesarely the number of cylinders, it may very well be 2 cyls less than the V10 M5 engine but it's 1.3 liter bigger wich counts alot. On the other hand the new V8 on the new m3 will probably pop out around 420bhp so that would be 105bhp/liter while the merc engine only 82 bhp/liter. And that's from a V8 with 2.3 liters of cc less. Of course the amg will have greater torque but that's what you would expect from that mamooth of an engine mounted on fat body like the CSL or E klass. If we even more take into consideration the idiotic move from mercedes to detune their engines for the SLK and CLK (direct rival for the m3) then we get even lower figures. Really what's that so astonishing?!

sorry mate, but the engine is 100% designed and built in house by amg... same way as saying that the V10 e60 engine has anything to do with the v8 e39 engine... And at the end of the day the engine is about power and torque AS well as driveability... How many times have you found yourself in the wrong gear coming out of a roundabout, and a 200bhp car blasts by you? this does NOT happen in AMG cars

oh and for some of the people that dont know what they are talking about. The reason why different AMG cars have different power outputs has to do with the available space in the engine bay... The CLK/SLK (future) do not have space for a large dedicated intercooler, hence they use a small dedicated one, HENCE a smaller power output to protect the engine
