Default 530i water pump

Hi i am new to the forum,i have a 2004 530i i have recently on a couple of occasions had a message come up on the screen saying engine overheating drive moderately, when it happened yesterday after a thirty mile drive the fans were only running slowly when the message came up, with no signs of overheating any ideas please, also what type of water pump is fitted to my car a electric or a mechanical pump.

Mechanical. if the car has never had a water pump, it needs one along with a t-stat immediately. also make sure your fans are functioning properly.
