I never got around to writing a detailed DIY...but if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.
Hi Busta,

I fitted a set of OEM Xenons with adaptive feature but can't seem to get this feature working. Capacitor sorted errors and earth wire got the ballasts firing no probs. I had the halogens with dial adjustment under the switch. Is there any way to power the adpative ecu? It doen't seem to have an earth!

Also, the high beam is only functioning on the inner halogen lamp. Is there a high beam within the Xenon headlight itself.

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers

With the help from Busta and Dav - I too have successfully completed an OEM swap from halogen to xenon.
The two major steps include grounding the ballast from the wiring harness, and adding a 4700uf 35W capacitor inside the actual headlight unit....

All works great, and only spent $300 for entire units (including bulbs, ballasts, and units).....

one more detail with another headlight, this time using H7 HID kit, no need to modify anything (bulb is held by oem H7 clip), ballasts fit perfectly under the lighthousing, capacitor and cables are kept inside... works just fine for months...

Do you have projector headlights ? Or just standard ? Does your xenon light blind other drivers?

nope, just base H7+H7 halogen lights... these are fitted with H7r kit, that means it comes with tinted bulbes like d2r do... so the projection on wall is not 100% like projectors (and never will be) but I would say pretty close :-) let say 90%... no blinding whatsoever and nice bonus is no "light/complete dark" effect like projectors have...

Sounds good man. I was debating between going that route or doing the whole xenon projector unit - either way I dont think you can go wrong.

Now I need some new Angel Eyes - do you know if someone has made an HID kit for pre LCI angel eyes ?

I did a quick drop in test similar to yours a few weeks ago and posted the results on Bimmerfest, there are also some side by side pictures if anyone is interested showing the stock bulb vs. the HID drop in.

The thread is here: H7 HID Drop In

I find it interesting is the difference in the tone between this thread and the other one; one would have thought I was giving crack to babies making this suggestion on the other forum.

BTW I still have not done this mod to my 530i, everyday though I'm considering it more.

U simply put it between yellow and brown wires and thats it :-) it is not very large, about 1/2'' thick and 1 and 1/2'' tall a piece... I could even fit the ballast inside (once you use the slim one), there is a lot of space... I decided to mount it under the lighthousing cause of heat (did not want to make the poor china ballast life any shorter) :-)
