Post #1 explains the situation clearly, I had factory heating and had to modify the coil spring to retain the heating as Fred's paddle kit uses the pins from the heating to get the signals through.
All coil springs from the e60 share the same part no.

Just want a confirmation!

EDIT :
Ok, according to my dealer, giving to the man my chassis number, I have that "61 31 9 129 499" (you are right, till 09/05 it was the only one) .
So I have the connector so my damn dealer was wrong when they said I had no connector .
But behind it ? Are there differences between cars equipped as factory with heated steering and not ?
Does someone has electric diagrams ?

I will have to find out WHAT is different between heated option cars and non heated option cars .
Imho the mod is possible and quite simple, but nobody (dealer, dealer warehouse etc.) knows how this thing works .

I promised to get back to some of you on this.
Since the very first European meet couple of years ago, Hobi had informed me that the paddle shift kit he was selling for auto tranny E60's was NOT compatible with steering wheel heating or it was installable if you were prepared to lose this option. There isn't a day in winter which I don't turn on the heated steering wheel, so I put it behind me as not doable.
However after some discussion last month with nicke60gre we came up with a plan using Fred's paddle kit by heavily modifying his already modified steering wheel coil spring. It was a long shot but Nick has pulled it off. He managed to cannibilise Fred's coil spring and add pins, wire tapes and other stuff to create an extra pair of pins on my original coil and use the same adapters that are available from the steering wheel. No modification has been made the cars electronics, as far as the car is concerned it knows none the better other than the heat switch loop still exists and that the auto recognizes the paddle emulation from Fred's kit.
The work is just sublime from both members :
Thanks guys!!
Now I have a auto tranny E60 with sports SMG steering wheel AND heated option enabled. Very unique, the only one on this board and possibly worldwide !
Process:

Thanks mate - not selling - this was a DIY with member nicke60gre. You basically need an extra wire tape (in the steering wheel) to create 2 new pins for the heating again because the paddle shift kit hijacks the original heat pins to emulate the gear changes.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I have searched the forum and I guess this is the thread that covers the topic I have in mind.
I'm considering changing my std Sports steering wheel to one with SMG paddle shifters. One of the issues has been which connectors to use in the steering wheel coil spring box. One solution has been to use the heating connectors (if installed or swap the coil spring box for one with heating connectors) and loose the heating function.
However on my E60 the two buttons on the left hand spoke on the steering wheel (phone and voice) are not active. What I'm thinking is that there probably are connectors for those two buttons in the coil spring box and which on my car is not being used. Wouldn't it be possible to use those two pins/connectors and rewire them to connect the paddles to the steptronic transmission instead of getting a new coil spring box with the heating connectors?
