Otherwise, there are a number of us on the forum running with non-run flat tyres on run flat rims. ...
ok ok, it is just that a very few post made me wonder if it will really be ok

but I'm 99% confident it will be ok

wouldn't it be nice if every BMW dealership would know the answer?

Yes you can , runflat approved rims were even used in the E39.
The only difference in a little rim on the inside of the wheel that prevents the runflat from slipping off when you loose pressure. Its called a EH2 hump and has been on many many BMW wheels for years, long before runflats were standard

driving with RFS or Non-RFS in the winter doeas not matter as far as they are WINTER TIRES. Driving on snow with summer tires = Mission Kill Yourself

anyway, now can a size 225 tire be fitted to 17" style 122 rim (currently 245 size tire)
This is the correct fact. All rims can take non-run flat tires. Run flat tires can only be mounted on run-flat rims. These RF rims should be identified by the mfr. Some, not all, web sites do this.

Naturally, if your car came with runflats, this should apply...if not...then you're fine but I don't know which cars come with runflats and which do not.

well so I did some research on our favourite tire shop and here is an answer about the sizes for 17" 122style BMW wheels.
Yes, width 225-245 will fit
Good. Now I can order regular non-rf winter tires for those wheels
Love this forum, AKA "BMW specialists Bible"
