The scoops are like funnels that go behind the grill. They reach out and grab more air and smash it into the intake. It's like watching a hotdog eating contest, only the hotdogs, and the arms holding the hotdogs are invisible.
Good to know. Might get these if/when I get the exhaust installed. I assume the shop in Northern California that installs the exhaust can do the intake and chip remap?

The remap will require that you send your ECU to RPi.

Is the "scoop" an actual hood scoop that goes into the hood? Seems that would look a bit goofy on a 5 series.
Here is what the scoops look like.

Can RPI send me some info on what total gains I should expect with the scoop, exhaust and a reflash on the 545?

I guess they don't "add up" like that though. It confuses me. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the extra 500 bones to send my ecu. Or just be happy with the hp gains from the exhaust and intake alone.

nope!

RPI says: We were able to finally fit the RPi exhaust on the 545i. Very impressive gains of 13 rwhp @5800 rpm and 13 lb-ft torque @5800 rpm. Peak hp gain of 11.8 from stock 250 rwhp to 261.8 rwhp.

RPI says: I would say 15 hp gain (Scoops + exhaust)
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=806623 (RPI wrote it himself)

Do the math:

Scoops (~2 hp???) + exhaust (~13hp) = ~15 hp.

Ok Confused? or hate me!
