Your unit would have detected laser only if they pointed it at you specifically or you just happen to be in the line of site and get an an incidental hit.

I have the v1 and highly recommend it. I've been considering getting a laser jammer since alot of cops use that around me now.

v1 has saved me a few times! plus it comes with a visor mount and it works grate in the E60. Not so much in other cars. Because it tends to point it up to much, but in the E60 it sits just right Nice and level for front and rear.

Top three Radars : Escort Redline, Beltronics STi Magnum ( or STi Plus) and V1.
Escort and Beltronics radar detectors have faster reaction time and better side view then V1 but V1 has better distance view.
All other radars are crap and has same crappy performance. I went a lot them from cheap to v1 and end up with Sti Magnum as best undetectable radar on market right now. But I would go with RedLine because it's best radar on market, even compare to V1. V1 has nice feature like arrows, but I have be able to live without them.

I have a Redline with the Live iOS application. It's social networking for those who get targeted, you get advanced warnings off of their hits. Only thing I really wanted from the Valentine 1 is the Arrows. Honestly, you cant go wrong with either Redline or V1. I've been saved a few times by it and it's payed for itself.

Redline has better overall performance over V1, but V1 has better k-band detection and arrows (helps understand where is coming from), but most radars now is Ka band and cop are located on side, Redline has better reaction (faster) on side view radar. Also if you are lived in the state where radar detector is illegal then buy STi Magnum it has same components as Redline but it's invisible to cops radars that may be affect performance a little bit.

I have experience with V1 and would have to agree it is top of the line. However, now there is a new player in the field, the Beltronics STi-R. From the looks of it, it is the only thing better than the V1 and when I upgrade, that is what I am getting.

One thing to note though is that if you are in an area where police use laser, you will need a laser jammer too. As soon as a detector warns you about laser, it's already too late.

One thing to keep in mind is that with radar detectors, you usually get what you pay for. Cheap detectors yield cheap results.

A buddy of mine has two vehicles outfitted with laser jammers and the V1 and has never gotten a ticket

A 3dB boost in 'range' on an antenna also means that the antenna has become less sensitive when signals are coming from other directions.
