I'm planing on getting 20 inch rims on my 530i (non sport). I posted a topic on some rims I was thinking about getting, but I decided not get them because, 1 they are kinda heavy at 38 pounds each, 2 I actually saw them up close and they weren't what I really expected. I'm now looking at the Maya DTM wheels (another member has them I believe). They are supposly much lighter around 27 pounds or so, and they're real 3 piece rims. My question is most shops down here (Miami, FL) want to put 255/35/20 tires but I'm like thats to big, I was suggesting 255/30/20, but they were like you are going to bend your rims on that tire size, what do you guys think? Also the rims will be at least 20x9 (ET 18), still thinking about the wider rims for the back.? Also people with 20's are you guys happy with them, house the ride? Would the ride be better in my car since I dont have the sport package? Any input would be helpful. THANKS!
I think the original tires on your car are 225/50-17. When you change tires/wheels you have to keep the overall diameter as close to the original tires as possible. Here are the overall diameters of several tire sizes, including the original sizes (first two lines):

225/50-17 (530i) = 25.85 in

245/4018 (545i Sp.) = 25.71 in

245/30-20 = 25.78 in

255/30-20 = 26.02 in

255/35-20 = 27.02 in

As you can see they are all different but the first four are very close to each other, but the last one (255/35-20) is WAY off. You should definately not use this size. Someone posted that they installed this size on their E60 and now one of the front tires is rubbing on turns because the diameter was too big. It will also affect your speedometer.

You don't actually need to use the formula to calculate the diameter manually. You can click on the link below, which will take you to a tire size calculator that not only tells you the diameter but a lot more. You can enter your original tire size on the left (Tire #1) and the new size on the right (Tire #2). Then it will show all the details for both sizes. If you enter 255/35-20 as the new size it will warn you that for safety reasons you should not change the tire diameter by more than 3%, and this would change it by almost 5%.

Yeap thats what I thought about 255/35/20, that they are too big. I used the tire calculator at miata.net before, but the one you gave me on 1010tires, seems to be more accurate. I think it's safe to go with 255/30/20 vs 245/30/20, both are real close however with 255/30/20 I can get michlin pilot a/s tires, they don't wear as fast as there pilot ps2, but they still deliver good performance. BTW is .66% larger tire size very noticeable in acceralation? Thanks!

PLEASE do not go with the 20s....If you read my post "Problem with 20 inch wheels", you will get the information on the problems one can encounter, especially with 20x8.5 wheels and 255/35 tires...visually they tires do not rub but they will definitely rub when you turn your wheels during driving. To correct my mistake and the wheel seller's ignorance, my best option was to look for 255/30 20-inch tires for the front at least but these were not available.

I ended up trading in the 3-day old 20 inch wheels and Yokohama tires for a set of new 19 inch Yokohama tires (talk about depreciation!). I then separately bought Mille Miglia EVO 19x8.5 wheels.

The 19x8.5 inch Mille Miglia with 245/35 tires do not rub at all but they did need aluminum spacer (ring) for installation. Ride is slightly inferior to the factory wheels.

If I were to do this all over again, I would keep my BMW style 123, 18x8 wheels with Dunlop run-flat tires.

If, after all of the above, anyone wants to exchange their BMW 18 inch with Mille 19 inchers, let me know!
What offset were your rims? Also, why didn't you try the tire size 245/30/20 or 255/30/20 like tirerack recommends? Thanks!
