That was a funny episode.

Not sure what you mean by remove.... if you mean is it easy to open the trunk, the answer is yes, but it down opens more slowly because the lid weighs more with the finisher.

If you mean, does the finisher come off easily? The answer is no... you would have to tear off the tape, and then get more to re-install it. So, if you need to use the keyhole, this mod is not for you. Personally, I never use the valet key, so that keyhole is unimportant.

What exactly did you need to cut off your license plate to make it fit?
The US plates have holes for the screws, but the holes are a little too low to use with this finisher. So you have 2 choices... drill new holes in the license plate, or cut a little bit of the trim off of the top of the plate. Since I don't have a drill, I chose to cut my plate using some handheld pliers.

Please post a pic of the car with the plate attached. I'm curious how this cutting job yet. The euro version really does look better but I'm worried about the plate fitment. I imagine a license plate frame would have no chance at all in fitting either?

I decided to look at cars on the way home today... I saw quite a few sporting the "new look":

Volkswagen Jetta
Audi A4
E39 5 Series

Seriously, while this might be the right look to combine with all the other M5 bodywork, this flies in the face of what Bangle's publicly stated design goals for the E60 were:

"It really is the first of a generation of cars on the road that bring light and form into an excitement across the surface really in a far more dramatic way than was ever done before on cars like this."

The concave portion of the trunk that's being filled by this trunklid finisher has two light "exciters" that I have observed:

-Reflections seem to move from the center of the trunk out towards the edge of the trunk on the concave feature of the trunklid when the car is in motion, giving a greater sense of movement.

-The trunk itself creates a perfectly congruent shadow that follows the concave relief in the panel and of the trunk itself. Filling in this space would kill this shadow. See the attached photo.

Kigerka you don't know how funny your reply was after reading UUronL statement on the new trunkpart.

I like it! But I would only get it if I had the M-Kit on the car!

Looks good. Not sure if I'd pay $400 for it, but I like it. Do you have a pic of the U.S. version?

I had noticed the absence of the keyhole as well.? Also, does this design strike anyone else as a step backwards in time?? This flat trunk design is reminiscent of E39 and E46 trunklids.? Perhaps in the deepest subconscious recesses we all secretly wish our cars were less avant-garde?

The stock trunk looks fine to me, but this trunk piece follows the theme of the e34 and e39 M5s as they had similar trunks pieces. In those cases, it had to do with improved aerodynamics, but not sure if the same applies here.

Hey Subterfuse, I think it looks great. I also think that to complete the clean look you have now accomplished on the rear end of your car, you MUST debadge. It would look so smooth, clean, nice and any other words you can think of to describe how unobstructedly flowing it will appear. (I think I made up that word "unobstructedly")
