I don't think that you have to replace the clusters anymore, at least my friend Antony who has an M5 cluster installed does not need to replace it during CIP updates. ...maybe the part# has been stored as well?

Marco, on my uncoded M5 cluster this mode shows up as large figures - you are right of course with reference to the coding, I don't mind having that way after the coding.

Andy, here is Anthony's 530i steptronic with M5 cluster and Fred's (my530i) M5 shift knob kit. Ha has no need for replacing clusters during updates and it has the large figures on screen.

No faults. The perfect transformation!

His technician (in Salonica) asked him how he prefer for the temp gauge to work and Anthony has selected it to work as consumption gauge instead of temp gauge. So simple!

OK. this is the thing. I like what Marco has done, however there are 2 important aspects explained further down:

Antony's M5 cluster has the large figures in M mode - Marco confirms it is like stock.
M5 stock is like this:

...this means there are 2 solutions.

Now, you might say it isn't a big deal, small figures, large figures - who cares ? However, it does indicate there are 2 solutions. I would accept Marco's version if:

> no further action needs to be taken with regards to coding.

If I need to swap clusters during progman/other coding this implies that : a) you have a "friendly" relationship with your local dealer who accepts this sort of moding/swapping during coding (some dealers won't accept any of this) and b) you will need to travel with your old cluster during trips. If for some reason during a trip something failed (like a LM > no lights) and you needed to code something new, without our original cluster we would be stranded as coding would not move an inch if all electronic parts haven't been checked for validity, including the cluster.
It's an inconvenient drawback in my eyes - would be great if Marco could at some stage confirm this with his technician ie. that no further action need be taken during software updates/coding...and that the cluster in fact has been recognised permanently.

Nick and I will get more info from Anthony on his solution plus I will be seeing soon a technician in Germany who also holds a solution -but not sure which one...

In any case this is better than nothing or rather ,better than seeing transmission faults all the time !!

Excuse me Andy, what did this Antony do ?
He plugged the cluster then .. ? Nothing, coding, he called a wizard .. ?

The size of the gear is quite important, especially with SMG .

Alex, as Nick mentioned, Anthony had it done in Salonica at some BMW parts warehouse - I guess that place has a very good technician - personally I couldn't distinguish his car from a real M5 less the exhaust tone...

solution he used is unknown, but not Marco's version.

Hopefully the same solution is used by the technician I know in Germany. I'll know next year when he's back from holidays.

My dealer said that he has just gotten the new CIP update. So he should install it on his computer and right after Xmas holiday he will upgrade my car's CIP. Of course he will try to do that without switching the cluster. I will keep you informed if it is workable.
