Sure, very easy. They plugged the car to the computer used for the CIP programming. On the computer monitor, right side, it appears the list of car CIP. Scroll down and find Combi. Than they should start the initializing procedure for the cluster codification. (it takes about 3 minutes to do that) Once having initialized and recognised that the cluster is suitable for the car on the monitor appears the icon codify. Now switch the two clusters and press enter. The computer will now codify the new cluster "thinking" that he does it on the old one. After abt. other 3 minutes everything is done.
Easy, isn't it?
It is indeed. Just a couple of things if you are aware :

1. Why would the computer accept to codify an already codified cluster --> it's own ? Normally, during an update, if something is not required to be updated, it is just bypassed. I don't object, sure it can be done - it's just contradictory to the CIP update philosophy.

2. If the update codifies the M5 cluster, it must pass VIN, km's etc. info to the epprom. The car therefore accepts it as it's own from now on. Why do we need to remove it during subsequent CIP updates ?

grazie.

1. During the update it is bypassed but in this case they do not update but codify it and apparently it does it.

2. They said because it has a part number that during update would not be recognized as belonging to this specific model. It happened to me with the CD changer when I have installed it on the previous E61 form the E60. They have update the CIP with a suitable one and they installed the older one. Everything was working properly but you could not update the CIP.

Because it is coded on a standard E60/E61 car.

I mean this Alex:

D --> DS--> shift 1 up/down: --> M mode

so in this mode on my normal cluster it indicates M1, M2, M3 and so on...on the M5 cluster just big numbers 1,2,3 and so on.

Ah, M1, M2, ok, sorry, I thought with the M5 cluster installed you felt to have a power button too
