I might have found the answer to my own question...

The N62 has 333 HP and 332 LB/FT of Torque
According to here: http://www.e60.net/information/options/engines/N62B44/
The N62 has 325 HP and 330 LB/FT of Torque
Since both peak were measured at the same RPM, maybe the difference is the charcoal filter - 8 HP and 2 LB/FT of torque.

Hey all! 
I took out the charcoal filter from my 2005 545i E60 and here are my findings:
1. Lots of dirt in the air intake area and cleaning it does seem to have helped...
2. Better acoustics - the engine roars much more at lower RPMs to the ear. The best place to experience this is to park the car in the garage and listen there [with the garage open, no CO poisoning!].
3. It drives the same to me - no change in lag, performance. Will keep an eye out on fuel economy - have reset my OBC. Watch for this soon,.,,

Ok - so fuel economy is up by 2-3 MPG but I am not sure if this was all due to the cahrcoal fiter removal. I installed a K&N air filter a few days ago and really notice a change in the engine performance. In third gear, for example, the pickup is much better and it literally pins me down to my chair with the pedal floored - something it didn't do well before.... Must be referring to the MAF sensor (mass airflow) which is just downstream of the airbox? I have heard in the past that an improperly oiled K&N filer can cause oil to get into and dirty the MAF sensor, but it can be cleaned (sprayed with contact cleaner) very easily as well...so didn't concern me too much.

FYI. My '08 535 doesn't have the charcoal filter. It has what sounds like a thicker orange filter only.

I think that's the OEM air filter. I have a 2008 528 and the charcoal filter is on the other side. Weird you wouldn't have both.
I wonder if that was a CARB standard that has now been relaxed...My '05 Mustang GT came with a similar charcoal filter in the intake tract...but mid-year they were discontinued....
