Hey guys! Just bought a 04 545i and this was the first "mod" I did. I did not put the charcoal filter back in. This should be fine right? Thanks!

I can't see how removing 1 of 2 filters will make your car feel different.

Our cars do not have a bad intake design. The US has placed a requirement for BMW to add a second filter. This filter is more restrictive than the air filter itself. Having an engine breath through 2 separate filteres makes it harder for the engine to receive air. Same concept when people remove the exhaust manifold, place headers and remove cat. The engine just breaths better. Imagine if you had a stuffy nose, you wink still be able to breath, but not as good if your nose was clear. You removing charcoal filter and upgraded air box filter you should receive a 10+ horsepower increase.

A 10 hp increase is purely a guess based upon some people saying the car "felt" different. Several posters said they felt nothing when they removed the filter. There is no objective information to prove this mod does anything.

Someone actually did a dyno test (on a m5 I believe) and there was a 8.9 HP increase. I think it was on m5 forum but I'll search it up later and post the link to the picture.

I know the thread you're referring to, but the M5 motor and intake system is designed much differently. We shouldn't make that assumption across the board. Until there is objective data, " feelings" don't carry weight.

A perfect example is the thread regarding RPI scoops. Posters on the M5 board did dyno runs and found they added hp. However, there was much discussion about whether the scoops worked on the M3. Finally RPI got on the thread and admitted the scoops added no HP on the M3. I'll dig that one up for you.

I did the carbon filter delete last night, took all of 5 minutes. Car is definitely a bit more responsive and idles down quicker after cold starting. While it may not add HP, it definitely makes a difference in throttle response and overall driveability IMO.

So I prolly shouldn't have done this in the dark but when I undid the third clip holding the airfilter on the side it fell into the engine bay. Anyone know where I can get a new one?

Just stumbled upon this. My 550i is at 106,000 miles so if this thing is not replaceable from what I am understanding and it does get clogged up at some point, removing it should make a difference for me considering the miles I have on it.
