[/quote]I guess the difference is we have a simple AUX input and the Mini and the other BMW's is an Ipod adapter.

My Ride: F02 LCI Individual

The AUX should be shown all the times in the idrive menu. Mine actually does, now... But I can't get any sound through...
We'll see...

My Ride: 530d SE Saloon 2003: Titanium Silver, Active Steering, Dynamic Drive, Sports Suspension, Star Spoke 138 7.5Jx17'' + Run Flat Tyres, Auto-Dim Interior Mirror, Grey-Flat Weave Cloth, Through Load System inc. Ski-Bag.
Thanks for all the great info about AUX.
I have arrange with my (UK) dealer to fit one next week. Cost here is ?34 for the part (as others have posted, this is BMW # 65.12.0.153.502) and according to the BMW regs, the dealer can charge a maximum of 1.5 hours fitting time (so max of ?150 UKP).
Hopefully, I will get the menu item AND some sound would be nice
I will be connecting my Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox MP3 player (similar to iPod).

My Ride: 2005 MY 545i Sport Saloon. 2006 MY Alpina B3S Convertible. 2006 MY Brabus Smart 42 Cabrio. 2006 MY AM DB9 Coupe.
Belated welcome aboard NEV.
Good luck with the retrofit! Hope you enjoy listening to 1000s of hours of music...
One tip, though.... If possible, ask your friendly BMW service guy if you can test the connection BEFORE they put all the trims etc.. back on! Given the right comments etc., they should let you into the service area so that you can connect your Nomad to it.
The last thing you want to happen is for you to collect the car on the forecourt, the retrofit not to work, and then you have to arrange another time for them to redo it. PITA (Pain in the ...)

Our dealer now has to update the car's software completely in order for the AUX input to work properly..
When this kind of major update (5-6 hours within the reach of a BMW technician) is required for such a minor installation, one can wonder what BMW really is thinking.

Thanks for the welcome. Getting the dealer to test it first is a great idea. Even more so since they are providing a collect-and-return service for the car. I will give them my MP3 player for the day to test the connection during [and after] the fit.
Thanks.

My Ride: 04 545i HUD, comfort seats, PDC, moon roof, Logic 7, Nav, Steptronic, K7 and diffusers, Aux-in for iPod!
just had mine installed: Difeo BMW in Tenafly, NJ. Went in at 9am. Part number ends in 502, as previously mentioned. Part cost $86, labor $180.
Warning!!
They got the car at 9am, installed the adapter and connection by 12.30pm. Then, they had to begin reprogramming functions. This went on all night, then the next morning, then I had to return the rented car around noon, so I went to the dealership and waited until 5.30pm!! The car reprogramming took over 24 hours. Then, they had to initialize, test for another hour. I did not leave the dealership until 6.30pm the next day.
So, if you are having yours done, be sure to:
1. bring copy of the installation TIS (which they happily used)
2. get rental car right away. don't wait three hours and then have them offer you a rental when they realize they have to reprogram. or, get a free loaner a few weeks in advance.
3. don't go back until they call to say it's ready
Please note: the aux input option is ALWAYS visible in the selections, right after CD as previously indicated. The auxiliary input jack is a dumb jack - it has no detection capabilities. It just pipes the signal. Fortunately, the input worked immediately after initialization. There were no issues with reliability. I was updated to version 13.3, so no v. 14 needed. Finally, the auxiliary input does not show up in the "next entertainment source" option. When cyclying through inputs with the steering wheel button, it skips the aux input.
Audio quality is excellent, very happy to have paid for the option. Worth every penny. Now my iPod is a constant companion. The trick now is to find a good iPod holder. Incidentally, highly recommend the Belkin iPod adapter as it means a single, clean wire connection from the iPod to the cig. lighter jack under the glove compartment. From there, another short audio cord goes into the glove compartment to the input jack.
