oh yeah, they have to bend pipes and custom fit everything to the car... this is where you tell them how far out you want the pipes extend. Normally though, they usually keep it even with the bumper b/c if they stick out too far then someone could get seriously burned by the pipes if you just finished driving.
Wow - thanks for the great info dudes. Im a little worried about all the welding and cutting on OEM parts! I guess you need to go to an exhaust shop you trust but I fear leaks, cracks, corrosions setting in that may end up costing a lot more in the long run... Any pitfalls that you guys are aware of? What are we looking at in terms of reversibility down the road if it came to that???

Wow - looks good Evo42. Did they have to cut and weld the pipes only? What Im specifically asking is, did any of the heatshield stuff and underside need to be modified or was it a simple snip-snip and in goes the new muffler???

Snip snip, no heat shield mods that I know of. I can't speak to the muffler installer nuances but it seemed pretty straight forward, I didnt give any specific instructions which tells me its up to the installers experience with these things. The shop I went to specialized in custom jobs as it relates to hot rods and muscle cars.
Mine sticks out to the left just a hair if you're looking at the rear. I'd be more specific with placement if I were to go back again but I like the way its sits now. Not too much under the car which creates more drone, not sticking out too much either.

Gregg, just so you know, I wasn't yelling at you

I was just in shock of the price of the OEM muffler,
I almost left it at the shop when I had mine installed

Even with the 14862, the shop had issues with the fitment at first. I suspect that you may encounter the same problem with the 14862. From what I recall, they are pretty much the same shape and size.

The key to the installation may require moving the original exhaust bracket (on the rear bumper) one over; there should be another mounting point next to it. If the muffler still sits too low, they may need to replace the bracket with a shorter one. Make sure that the replacement bracket has a rubber center to minimize droning, vibrations etc.

For the inner mounting bracket (near the wheel well), they'll need to flip the metal rod that mounts to the bracket and [welded to] the exhaust.

Im confused. All you guys talk about these Magnaflow exhausts. Why does their website specifically say that the exact exhausts you guys are talking about are designed specifically for import tuner cars and they dont currently offer an exhaust for a V8 BMW?????? What am I missing? I have a feeling all you guys put an incompatible exhaust on your car that gives you sound but improper backpressures. Id be curious to see true readings of power before and after. Dont get me wrong, I desperately want one and I may still get it despite my suspicions because like all of you, Im looking for the sound but I really dont want to lose any power or torque. I think Im going to call them and ask this question.
