Give that you could get essentially all the options in a 535i as you would in a 550i (except the engine itself), why would anyone get a 550i now and pay more? For a few $$ thousands, you can boost the I6 to equal or better engine power.
Somebody enlighten me.
Somebody enlighten me.
BMW VP of marketting handed 1-euro bill to VP of sales and said, "yeah you right, they'll bicker like crazy about 535i vs 550i".
PS:Remember the trading place movie with Eddie murphy and Dan Akryod???

I think everyone here agrees the 550i is the "top dawg".
IMO giving the 535i two turbos narrows the performance gap to the point where it becomes more difficult to decide whether or not spending the extra 8k is worth it. Thats where personal preference kicks in - whether its reliability concerns, body kit preference, or the percieved admiration from others.
My only gripe is about those who knock forced induction. BMW doesn't agree with you, so in order to maintain your top dawg status you are going to have to consider a TT V8. And when the performance guys start raising the boost on this engine you are going to have to do the same in order to keep up.
But when the TT V8's are released the performance gap among the 5ers will widen again and debates like this will no longer exist.

Naturally aspirated power vs turbo has been BMW's history pattern. Just look at the M cars.
There are also the other intangiables; like bigger brakes, low end torque, etc.
The 06 550 cpo with more options was a better value at the time then a new 535.
The prices on the 535 were crazy at the time and the only benefit was the awd option if you were to consider it(which I did).

You are correct, but Dinan will not cover any engine damage that may result from the increased boost. Make sure you read it carefully.
The actual BMW NA warranty is probably underwritten by a third party anyway.

Well, color comes to mind given an exclusive color (Carbonschwarz metallic) for the 550i only.

BMW, MB, Aston all put V12 in their high end cars. Not I6 TT. Why?

UPDATE: I saw where you saw that, its in a section that is discussing any modification other than Dinan modifications and that would include altering the boost, by other means, that Dinan allows for in their product.

There's no debate as to which is the "top-of-the-line." The 550i performs better, marginally or not. It costs more. It rides better (IMO.) And, it's the 5-5-0, not the 5-3-5 or 5-2-8. The 5-5-0. Heck, I can pretty much even see "5-5-0-i" going through other drivers' minds as they go by or I go by them. There's even a different attitude from admirers. I can see it. A 528i or 535i can go by and people hardly think twice. A 550i goes by and you can see a bit of a nod of respect. Like, "That's the big dog!"
I have to disagree here. As a BMW enthusiast, I dont consider the 550i the top dog. I consider the M5 the top dog. When I see a 528 or 530 or 535 on the road, I dont look down on them. I dont give them any less respect than I would to the guy driving a 550. This is because where I live, there are many schmucks with bucks that want to drive the latest and greatest yet have zero clue what they're driving. They walk into the dealer and pay whatever to drive whatever and dont give it a second thought. My neighbor is 76 yrs old and drives a silver 550 without the sport pkg. Believe me, he's no enthusiast. He thinks I currently have the identical car to him. What does that tell you? Respect is earned, not just given because you drive a car with a higher designation on the badge than the guy in the next lane. Your post is likened to the thought process of these schmucks with bucks. I, on the other hand debadge all my cars and I've had quite a list of cars. Always have, and always will but thats just me.
All the best
