I need to shave one bimmer off as I'm traveling a lot now and keeping two cars does not make any sense. One has to go. Wife and I would like to keep the 5er but I'm worried about how it will hold up over the long run. This thing has electronics up the wazoo and hasn't been exactly trouble free. My car, knock on wood, has had no problems yet so that's one thing going for it.
I just wanted to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thanks
I plan to drive my 535i for as long as logically feasible. All my buddies and co-workers thought that my 02 X5 was only 1 year old
Though after the waranty I just use the logic of driving fun VS the cost to keep it going. If the cost outweight the fun, it's time for new car.
It helps to do some of the maintenance yourself.

I plan to drive mine until it gives up the ghost...hopefully 10+ years. I've spent 12+ years in Germany and have driven BMWs exclusively. My 535i on order will be my fist 5er. The others were all 3 and 7 series. Some were absolutely trouble free and others needed a little more attention but all in all they were the most durable vehicles around. Some of them had upwards of 300,000 km and still drove tight and pulled strong. The inline six is so smooth and perfectly balanced hearing it open up at full throttle is nothing short of exhilarating. Whether it was the 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, or 3.5, the six is an amazing power plant around which to build a superior sport/luxo vehicle. It's the main reason I ordered the 535 vice the 550. From this forum, it sounds like I won't be disappointed.
I'm lucky enough to enjoy the best of both models, my 10 year old E39 523SE is my regular run about car. Its had plenty of TLC since it came into my possession and to be honest I love this car and the qualities it instills (feels just right behind the wheel). My other car is a 535d M Sport (2 years old).....this is a very good looking car but doesn't feel as good as the old E39. That being said it looks the business especially with the sport body kit and the MV2 alloys.

Regards

Harry

I'm gonna keep mine for maybe four or five years --at least until a new BMW comes out
and I start dreaming about it...

I will look to keep the e60 for as long as humanly possible without burning large amounts of money each year.
As I currently have 2 other family cars which are already 10+yrs old and still in working order for wife and eldest son, I cant see why I should buck the trend and change the sexist car I own.

I a believer of making the asset work for you after its paid off, so making the payments, then recouping the costs for the same period of time to half the expense.

There is no such thing as a bad car, just a bad owner, so care and responsibility should see me and the e60 be friends for a long time. As for changing a car to keep up with the latest gadgets, man thats what Car companies want us to do and play to our heart strings for easy money.

I also love your tailgaite photo, as its the image of my car - Mysthic Blue, 06/2004 ( which I have now owned for 2 months), bought from the Denmark Consulant in Australia.

I hope your car for many years to come and all your friends who think it is new ( I get the same feedback and looks) - MAD !

keep, care and you will be rewarded !

Masheen,

The "F10" is the new upcoming 2008 BMW 5 Series.

A tip: type in "F10" in the search box in the top right-hand corner and you will find a lot of info and comment on the subject

Thanks, did typ the " f10 " at search. Quite an amazing new 5'er that will come. But still, I'll keep my E60 until the facelifted f10 comes out.

I will probably keep mine until 2 or 3 years after the launch of the F10.

So probably another 5 years or so.

Will keep the 08 550 until the repair bills (or gas prices) kill it off.

(550 just replaced a 95 540i with 150k miles. The 540i was the best car I ever owned.)
