I plan on keeping mine until I win the lottery. Suffice it to say, I expect to have it a LONG time.

I am worried about the little things with this car though. They are incredibly complicated machines, with many moving parts. So many places for something to go wrong.

Exactly my thought.

I'm likely to sell my car before the warranty expires. BMW electronics are notoriously erratic after a few years and in particular if you have lots of options on the car ,the more things there are that can go tits up.

A friend of mine picked up a late model limited edition e39 with very high spec about a year ago. As that model was coming to the end of it's life cycle when it was made ,you imagine that most of the nagging problems would have been ironed out by then.

Not so. He has had more things go wrong on that car than I believed could actually go wrong. Cost him big bucks as it was out of warranty and suffered all the inconvenience too.

Nien danke.

I plan to drive mine until it gives up the ghost...hopefully 10+ years. I've spent 12+ years in Germany and have driven BMWs exclusively. My 535i on order will be my fist 5er. The others were all 3 and 7 series. Some were absolutely trouble free and others needed a little more attention but all in all they were the most durable vehicles around. Some of them had upwards of 300,000 km and still drove tight and pulled strong. The inline six is so smooth and perfectly balanced hearing it open up at full throttle is nothing short of exhilarating. Whether it was the 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, or 3.5, the six is an amazing power plant around which to build a superior sport/luxo vehicle. It's the main reason I ordered the 535 vice the 550. From this forum, it sounds like I won't be disappointed.

I hope to drive my 08 550 sport until I[/u] give up the ghost!

At 73 I want this to be the last car I ever have to own.

But, then, I said that about the last three I owned.

... Design wise nothing beats the E60.
Right on Busta! All my cars and truck lasted 17+ years with me doing all minor maintenance (oil/filer changes, brake pads and rotors). I plan on doing the same with the 545i.
Unless the call of the future f10 will be too much to ignore.

You'll be saying the same thing for the next 3 cars to come.

Most likely I will keep my E60 through the end of 2009. But I have already been eyeing other cars, like the 335i coupe. I almost pulled the trigger on one last month. I decided to stick with the E60, since she has warranty and maintenance until middle of 2010. Maybe by then I can get the new C63, it?s a beast. It may just be me, but I wouldn?t keep my E60 past the warranty. It has had to many problems, its going to the dealer next week again for tranny issues, 3rd time in 2 1/2 months. I am going to try and get a better loaner this time, had a X3 last time wasn't impressed at all.

I have my E60 as a company car. Lease period is 4 years or 160K kilometers whichever comes first. If it stays as trouble-free as it has been so far, I'll consider buying it from the lease company.

And now a more realistic answer: I'll probably drive it to 160K kilometers in less than 3 years and then try to fit a F10 into my lease budget...
