What are the merits of I6 engines over V6

One item not mentioned is the fact that many engines are now made of Aluminum rather than iron. Therefore the shorter the engine, less expansion takes place. On a V6 the difference in expansion (especially with aluminum) between the head and block is considerably less than on a I6. BMW is one of the few manufacturers that have sucessesfully engineered the gasket material on their I6 to prevent head gasket leaks do to the expansion problem.
