Does one carry insurance in Canada to pay for that? I know my comprehensive section of my insurance covers it.
I know my comp doesn't cover replacement of window due to rock or whatever that caused a crack (covers it in an accident). They will though pay for chip to be filled in if it hasn't started to crack out across the windshield.

I'm not from Canada or live there.

bimmerman,
I just got mine done 2 months ago at Speedy autoglass in Oshawa. Cost me $800 all in. Stealer wanted 1100 just for the glass, plus labor on top. Speedy uses aftemarket glass, but they guy there told me that he wouldn't be surprised if it comes from the same suppler that BMW uses because he occasionally gets his glass with the BMW label on it.
They did a decent job, done in 45 minutes, but had to let the car sit there for another hour to let the adhesive set before they let me drive it away. Apparently that has to do with liability or something.
Anyway, I think you can do better than $800 if you call around, I just didn't have the time then. From what the installer told me after doing mine, it's nothign special on BMW than most any other car. Only thing is though if you have a HUD you have no choice but to use dealer as they are the only ones that have the glass.
Good luck!

dcaranci & Skylolow thanks-a-mill for the valuable input.
I also actually spoke to my Insurance today and they told me it can be covered under my Comprehensive Coverage without any liability to myself for the claim. Deduct is $500 so still thinking about claiming or paying out of pocket not sure.
Just wondering now if I should go with the original BMW glass or aftermarket? I heard the BMW glass is not that strong and considering the large crack of which I don't even know how it got there (Cold Weather??? Its been -30 with the wind chill) and previous pitting I'm really not sure which way to go.
Any thoughts from n e one???

Glass is glass... there's very little if any difference between "BMW" or aftermarket glass as long as it's AS1. I suppose one mfr of glass might make it a little thicker/thinner than another mfr, but keep in mind that pitting is on the surface and having 10 inches thick glass wouldn't prevent that. Pitting is a problem on the car, but my opinion is that it has more to do with the aerodynamic design of the vehicle than the mfr/type of the glass itself.
As for your crack... who knows, but I'm also in the GTA and the extreme cold snap we just had didn't bother my car at all, and remember I had my window replaced in October with "aftermarket" glass.
But, if you're going to go through insurance then all you are going to pay is the $500, then you might as well go and have the dealer take care of it for you. They might appreciate it later when you might need a freebee or something.
Caution however though... I would bet that your insurance has a limit of what they will reimburse for a windshield replacement and I bet it's not much more than $1000, which means you'll be on the hook for that difference as well as the $500 deductible.
Good luck!

I'm driving along on the highway
at 70 miles an hour (the speed limit), minding my own business,
when outta nowhere there's this big crack in my windshield!!
I swerved right,
and then left,
and it was still right there!!
