Every two weeks or so, my transmission sputters in 5th gear while driving. Usually happens when driving through rush hour traffic. I still think it's a software issue, but very annoying.
here is how I managed to reset the tranny so it no longer sputters for a good two weeks...

1-When you experience the sputtering effect, put the car in manual M5 mode, make sure you are driving over 60kmph or 40mph.
2-you will notice te tranny sputtering for a while, leave it 5th gear for 5 minutes.
3-now switch to M6
4-wait about a minute then put it back to M5

Mine will reset and drive smoothly again as it did today and a few weeks ago.

What a mess, BMW should recall this garbage and change the trannys.
Sheesh, anyway I hope this works for you.

I have a very similar issue. Once in a while when I step on it hard my trans. has problems going from 2nd gear into 3rd gear. It sputters and my I drive gives me a trans. error. It goes into safety mode. I have to restart the car to make it go away. I told BMW about it while at a free inspection event and they told me nothing is wrong with it. Bull shit 2nd gear into 3rd is not the Ultimate machine thats $60,000

Alot of people have this issue. I had it once and went through the same thing with the stealer. They updated the trans twice and same issue. They then said they can not find anything wrong. I went to an Indy shop and had the fluid changed and presto no more issues. It depends on how hard you drive on how often but I say every 35000 to 50000 you should have it changed. Also at some point have the pan and filter changed. On older models its just a pan with a mag. While you are at it get the differential fluid changed to. Do not flush the trans. because of mileage set in.

You should flush your tranny and change the pan/filter if you're about 75,000-100,000 miles or so. We posted on this years back. Dealers are full of BS info so beware. Some claiming to resuse old fluids and taking about particles dislodging in the tranny etc. Yeah maybe on a 300K mile vehicle driving around on original sludged oil lol. it's not my first beamer it's like my 8th and currently one of three i currently own.
I never had an issue and still don't. Mine was preventative maintenance.

Great information. Do you recommed me taking to the dealer or having a local body shop do it? Whats the estimated price to get this done?
