Too light steering on E60.
I had some of the same reservations for a while after switching from E39 to E60 AS. After two years, I find the road feel to be very good at higher speeds. I like AS as well as the new front end on the E60. The E39 was outstanding. At this point, I have a feeling that to go back to that feel would be a downer.

I have recently converted from E39 (523 i '99) to E60 (525i '04). I love the driving performance of the E60 a lot. However, I am quite disappointed that the steering is so extremely light compared to the E39. Okay, maybe the E39 was too heavy on the steering wheel, but the E60 is far too light in my opinion
I am very surpriced that BMW has changed to almost "American" power steering
I have the servotronic system, or activ driving as some call it. Does this mean anything in the respect?
Some opinions about this? Is it possible to reduce the power of the power steering electronically?

Used to have std E39 steering, then 2003 E60 Active steering with servotronic and now have just servotronic only. IMHO the best steering is the latter. Its nice and light for low speed stuff and just perfect for hard fast driving. After driving my wifes std steering X5, which feels so heavy, I love getting back into my car.

Its funny but if you get a 06 model you will actually notice that the steering is actually a lot lighter than the 04 E60 model. Also mucking around with software upgrades seems to effect the steering. I was always a fan of the E39 and I drove one the other day belonging to a pal and the steering seemed awful. Far too heavy!

My non-AS car steering is too heavy on the highway. After a long trip, my hands are tired. I also think the heated sport wheel is too thick. These are really the only complaints I have with the car, after 1 month and 4k miles.

I agree my E39 steering was much heavier than my E60 but i like the E60 steering better now. I don't think its too light IMHO. I don't have AS either.

Those of you who had e39s - besides weight/resistance, did the old 5 series steering give you more feedback than the e60? I can barely feel the road with my AS...

Yes it did give far more feedback than the E60 but I think its far more of a drivers car than the E60. I think the newer model car is caught up too much in setup and software refinement.
