Many thanks for all your replies.

Naturally I am not surprised at the poll's result as I expected it. But as it stands 25% of you would go for the Lexus is still an impressive number in a BMW forum. What I mean is, the Lexus does make a valid case for itself especially amongst hardcore BMW enthusiasts.

I still did not make a final decision as the Lexus lack of space is the major drawback for me. It is a VERY good value for what it does in terms of equipments, refinement, quality and dealer service. But its lack of space is a major drawback.

Still undecided, but not for long I think.

I will pick e60 over GS. You'll get more with GS and it's more luxury, but you give out the handling from e60.
Many people like me enjoy to drive e60 everyday, it's fun and you won't get bored of driving it.

Lexus GS is too comfortable, steering is light. You will get bored driving it after few months.

If that 5er doesn't have the sports package, its a tough decision. Why not go the desiel route? Budget considerations? Both cars are not really that comparative.

IMHO, I'd rather not opt for a bare bones BMW. Maybe get the Lexus now and get a real bimmer next time round.

I have both... Lexus (Wife - GS), BMW (Mine). I much rather drive my car...The Lexus is a very nice car, My wife loves it and she is likly to get another GS next year, but I wouldn't think of it...I love the E60.

Each unto their own, but me personally, would never buy a Lexus due to the fact it is at its core, still a toyota. Not that Toyota's are bad cars, but it really takes the edge off the ethos of driving a marquee - much like the Jaguar X-type, which at its core is a Ford Mondeo.

Still, I wouldn't knock someone for choosing a Lexus, but it just doesn't have the ethos a BMW has. Personally, I'm an emotional sort and while the Lexus is no doubt a great car, it comes across to me as a clinical car and just doesn't have that emotional pull that the BMW has.

Sure, my baby doesn't have HUD or active cruise control, but would I swap her for another car at the similar model level within different brands? Absolutely not.

I think the e60 is a better car, but out of the two choices, I'd think I'd go for the brand new Lexus?

How much would a new 530 cost in the UK, because it seems that both cars should be roughly the same price brand new.

Price of these particular two cars Brand New

The GS430 is ?47K
The 530i M Sport with Media pack is ?40K

So the GS430 is ?7K dearer Brand New

Now Since the 530i M Sport is a used 9 months old with 12K miles it is going for ?34K (logical). The GS430 is Brand New but is registered in the dealer's name so is classified as used even though it has only delivery mileage on it, and because it depreciates much more in the 1st year than the BMW it is going for the same price as the BMW ?34K.

As I mentioned before, any further depreciation is not a major issue for two reasons:
1- Both cars are worth the same at then end of 4 years of ownership.
2- I keep my cars for about 5 years.
