Doubt that that thin layer of metal could be support of any kind...

Are you going to be sound deadening that panel or reinforcing it?
As im sure you will get a lot of panel flex,
Also are those subs free air?

Heres some more installs...Not specifically subs mounted on back panel but worth a read none the less.

I don't know if that's supposed provide lateral support for the car as a whole? Just like the struts you find under the bonnet (like the red one here )
That was one of my considerations when I did my stereo install. I was worried that cutting the rear deck may compromise the structure of the car somehow. Now, I don't have any evidence to support or refute that claim.... but I was not willing to take the risk.

The other reason why I did not cut into the rear deck was because I installed my amplifier rack under the rear deck, so there wouldn't have been room for the rack if the subwoofer baskets were hanging down there.

Another option would be to build a subwoofer box that fills the opening of the folding seats, and fires the woofers into the car. The only reason I did not do this was to preserve the split-fold seat access.

Thank you jazz5000 for the links, Those are some massive projects!

I'm not sure if they are free air subs, i'll see how they going to sound, if i'll need a box, i'll build one. Actually i was thinking of covering the subs regardless. I'm definitely will be reinforcing the panel to make it more flex.

You should definitely apply some dynamat sound dampening to that rear deck. It will rattle like a mofo.

You should have check first if your subs were meant to be run in IB.

I'm also running my subs in IB, here's some pics of my previous set up. System is in the middle of an upgrade
