Not really very smart (of your friends), wearing the emergency plastic key out like that for a purpose for which it's not intended.

Besides, I'm not sure if it has any limitations on use like opening the trunk etc.

But again, it's not a VALET KEY anyway.
well I have lost my somewere in the house so I dont have this key any more, 1 less headhach for me.

A rather expensive suggestion if each new key is damaged by salt water after every dive.

well if itis under warranty then it will be free, but no warranty then I would not take it near salt water.
In HK itis 100% salt water air, we are on the sea.

I can't think of any BMW territory which would replace, under warranty, a key which had been damaged by salt water following a dive.

You'd have to lie about how the damage was sustained to get anywhere near a warranty claim in these circumstances - that's not what I do.

The plastic keys were not meant as spares (even though many use them for that purpose). They are valet keys, and will not open the trunk or glove compartment. The newer E60's with the Start/Stop button use the remote as the valet key and a pull-out metal key that lock/unlocks the trunk and glove box, so there is no more need for the plastic key.
I have a 2006 E61 with the Start/Stop button, and I have the two keys and the plastic key too...

For MY2007, at least in BMW NA territory, the key is no longer included AFAIK. This is in part due to the fact that BMW can open the car remotely with BMW assist and you get 4 years of assist for free.
