Software question?

Excuse me for being a bit dense, but how can upgrading the software change the mechanicals on Active Steering? 
My cars s/ware has been upgraded three times and on each occassion I have noticed no changes to the car whatsoever.
Anyone out there an expert on this subject?

My Ride: 545i Mystic Blue/Black Leather Type 124 Wheels
All it can change is how the computer controls the active steering.
Remember the system has a electric motor in it that is controled by the computer

Another newbie question, if someone has a list of what the recent software upgrades fix
it may help me demand an upgrade from my dealer, thanks....
