That's an easy problem to fix depending on your car the part is on national backorder. BMW should have issued a recall for this.

1) The SZL module needs to be replaced in your steerin column.
This module feeds info to your BMW to control the braking required for DSC to operate.

I have the 530XI '06

here is my description for the work order:

cust sts the start-off and DSC warning is on
SZL???

-----
SZL SIB 34 04 06

Car, disconnected battery and noted fault a85d stored, as per sib to dis assemble sterring column and remove and replace SZL module 34 06 06 removed and replaced szl and programmed and coded complete

That solved my problem... as for weird braking...... I don't know what to say... the only thing you would really have problems with:

1) no DSC - its like driving a regular car
2) Adaptive headlamps might not turn.. or they might move all over the place
3) your call rolls back on a hill -its like driving a regular car.

I just got an "AWD and DSC Malfunction" today in my 530xi with 3000 miles. My brake light is on right now (orange). I am also getting an error with Start-off assistance being deactivated. What really sucks is that my appointment is 3 weeks away!! Is it okay to drive during all this time?

Just be very careful when driving with this problem. My steering became really heavy or stuck unexpectedly while cornering sometimes - very scary experience. On another thread, someone reportedly drove into a fence due to this steering malfunction. You can ask your dealer to reschedule to an ealier date because driving a broken car like this is too dangerous.

I asked them if it was dangerous to drive under these conditions and they told me no. I can't believe how long it takes to get an appointment at my dealership. As a previous benz owner I was always able to get an appointment within the week.
