The car is self preserving.

I know that's not true with the SMG (and the manual, according to Hormazd's post). Can anyone confirm that the steptronic actually obeys these lines? I'm guessing it doesn't. As with any white line, it's a warning, not a mandate. If it was red, then yes, the car should not allow any revs beyond it.

OK I misspoke. My experience is only with the Step so I should have been more specific.

As far as the step goes, on a step in M the car will shift at the with marks. I have seen this first hand on a moderately warm car. The marks were at 5K and the car was in M and it shifted it self at the 1st white mark.

I find it very useful. BMW think of everything I remember the day I picked up my first E60 and saw it working I thought clever way to replace the temp gauge.

I thought in a previous thread you had never noticed the white hash marks.

Why would anyone want to take the engine up to 5500 RPM where the white hash marks start when the engine is cold?? IMO it can't be very good.
cheers

Yup, the M-cars have a much more sophisticated setup with the tach. Instead of a little mechanical band that spins (like our white bars), they use LEDs to show the variable RED line which is tied to the transmission, rev limiter, etc.

M as in Manual...

I was in M and it shifted from 1st to 2nd when it reached the white marks. (It doesn't take much for a 545 to rev in 1st gear) It was quite by accident I discovered this. I was crossing an uncontroller intersection and gave it some juice, next thing I know it shifted into 2nd on me.

Interesting...

So you're saying that a steptronic in Manual mode shifts at the variable white line? I'm intrigued but still skeptical...

Exactly...those marks are based on coolant temperature which warms up much faster than oil temp. I could see this in my m3, while the oil was still very much cold, the tach warning lights would disappear...it takes a good 5 miles or so of driving to fully warm up the oil.
