Isn't the gauge that surrounds the rev counter indicating how high to rev the engine without any damage whilst its warming up a great idea! I find it very useful. BMW think of everything I remember the day I picked up my first E60 and saw it working I thought clever way to replace the temp gauge.

If you try you'll find you can not rev past thse marks during warm up.

The car is self preserving.

I thought in a previous thread you had never noticed the white hash marks.

I know that's not true with the SMG (and the manual, according to Hormazd's post). Can anyone confirm that the steptronic actually obeys these lines? I'm guessing it doesn't. As with any white line, it's a warning, not a mandate. If it was red, then yes, the car should not allow any revs beyond it.

On the 545i, there are four white bars left when the car is at normal operating temperature. Again, as with many tachometers, there is a white marking before the redline. Keeping four white bars pretty much makes the tach "normal" looking.

It's also not true for the Auto.

From BMW's perspective, what is more important - one cold thrashing of *your* engine or you not quite getting out of the way of that out of control truck....

Two remain with the R6 which would indicate 6800 out of the available 7000 redline. (there are 5 sections per 1000 right?)
